Penile Implant Center of Excellence

Penile implants are a long-term solution for erectile dysfunction (ED) when medications or other treatments haven’t worked. ED can affect intimacy, confidence, and overall quality of life—but effective solutions are available.

At Conrad Pearson Clinic, patients receive care from Dr. Michael Granieri, a recognized expert in prosthetic urology and the only fellowship-trained specialist in the greater Memphis area for male fertility and reconstructive/prosthetic surgery.

  • Natural look and feel
  • Ability to be spontaneous
  • Fully concealed within the body
  • No ongoing medication or side effects
  • High satisfaction: 97% of patients and 98% of partners report successful sexual activity

What Is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity. Occasional difficulty can happen at any age due to stress, fatigue, illness, or alcohol, but ongoing problems are not a normal part of aging and should be medically evaluated.

While “erectile dysfunction” is the modern medical term, many men find the older term “impotence” more emotionally accurate. ED can carry a significant psychological burden, including frustration, loss of confidence, anxiety, and feelings of diminished control or masculinity. This emotional impact is often why men delay seeking care, even when effective treatments are available.

Causes and Symptoms

ED is different from low sexual desire, infertility, or problems with ejaculation or orgasm. It’s extremely common, affecting over half of men aged 40–70, as well as younger men with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, obesity, or a history of smoking or excessive alcohol use.

For most men, ED develops gradually. Early signs include:

  • Loss of spontaneous or morning erections
  • Erections that take longer to achieve
  • Difficulty maintaining rigidity during intercourse

Over time, erections may become less reliable and more easily disrupted by stress, fatigue, or distraction.

Underlying Health Connections

Normal erectile function requires coordination among the brain, nerves, blood vessels, hormones, and the penis. Anything that interferes with these systems can cause ED. Often, ED is a symptom of an underlying medical condition rather than just a sexual performance issue.

Importantly, ED can be an early warning sign of vascular disease. Because penile blood vessels are smaller than those of the heart, blood flow problems may appear as ED years before other cardiovascular symptoms.

At Conrad Pearson Clinic, ED is treated as a medical condition, not just a quality-of-life issue. Dr. Granieri works closely with patients to identify the underlying cause and develop a personalized treatment plan that aligns with each patient’s health, goals, and expectations.

Dr. Michael Granieri is the only fellowship trained specialist in the greater Memphis area for Male Fertility and Reconstructive/Prosthetic Surgery.

He has devoted his career to helping men significantly improve their quality of life and increase their chances of conceiving children of their own. He has also been designated as a center of excellence for penile implants, which indicates his experience and commitment to providing advanced care and optimal outcomes for men.

Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction

Treatment for ED often begins with conservative, nonsurgical options, depending on the cause and severity of symptoms. These may include:

  • Oral medications that improve blood flow to the penis
  • Vacuum erection devices
  • Penile injection therapy
  • Lifestyle modifications, such as managing diabetes, heart disease, or weight
  • Hormonal evaluation and treatment, when appropriate

Many men respond well to these therapies. However, some find them ineffective, inconvenient, or limited by side effects. Others prefer a solution that offers greater reliability and spontaneity.

When conservative treatments no longer provide satisfactory results, penile implants offer a proven, long-term solution for erectile dysfunction.

Penile Implants: A Reliable, Long-Term Solution

A penile implant is a surgically placed medical device that allows men with ED to achieve an erection whenever desired. Unlike medications or injections, penile implants work independently of blood flow or nerve function, making them an excellent option for men with complex or longstanding ED.

Penile implants are entirely internal, invisible to others, and designed to restore sexual confidence and function. Once healed, men can engage in sexual activity without planning around medications or devices.

Men who may benefit from a penile implant include those who:

  • Have not responded to medications or injections
  • Have ED related to prostate cancer treatment or pelvic surgery
  • Have medical conditions affecting blood flow or nerve function
  • Desire a permanent, dependable solution

What to Expect

Consultation

Your care begins with a comprehensive consultation focused on understanding your medical history, prior ED treatments, and personal goals. Dr. Granieri will evaluate whether a penile implant is appropriate for you and explain the different implant options in detail. This visit is designed to ensure you feel informed, comfortable, and confident in your decision.

Surgery

Penile implant surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing most patients to return home the same day. The procedure is done through a small incision, and all components of the implant are placed entirely within the body. Advanced surgical techniques are used to maximize comfort, safety, and long-term outcomes.

Recovery and Follow-Up

Recovery is gradual over several weeks:

  • Light activity can often resume within a few days
  • Normal daily routines typically resume shortly thereafter
  • Follow-up visits focus on healing, device use, and optimal function

Once fully healed and activated, patients can resume sexual activity with confidence. Dr. Granieri and his team provide ongoing support and long-term follow-up to ensure continued satisfaction.
