Peyronie’s Disease (PD) is a condition that causes fibrous scar tissue (plaque) to develop inside the penis, leading to a curvature, pain, and sometimes even erectile dysfunction. Peyronie’s disease can be caused by an injury to the penis, genetics – men with relatives who have PD or a history of Dupuytren’s Contracture are at higher risk. It is also more common as men age, with increased incidence at age 40 – 60. While surgical options exist to correct the bend, many men can benefit from non-surgical, injectable treatments that can reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. Symptoms of Peyronie’s Disease include:
• A bend in the erection with or without pain
If you develop a bend with a bump in your erection that you didn’t notice before, it may be a sign that you could have PD. Some men report they feel pain in their erection as the bend develops for the first 12 to 18 months.
• A Peyronie’s plaque
This is a bump of scar tissue under the skin of the penis. It’s most commonly found on the topside of the penis. Some men can feel it, while others don’t notice it. Sometimes men may think it is cancer, but Peyronie’s plaque is not cancerous.
• An erection that bothers you
Many men with PD report being bothered by the way the bend in their erection looks and the challenges it presents to their ability to engage in sexual activity. It may even result in pain during intimacy or arousal.
What Are Injectable Treatments?
At the Conrad Pearson Clinic, we specialize in the latest therapies for Peyronie’s Disease, including several minimally-invasive injectable treatments. Injectable therapies deliver medication directly into the penile plaque to help break down scar tissue, reduce curvature, and alleviate pain. These treatments are typically performed in the office and may also be paired with physical therapy exercises for the optimal results. Injectable treatments may be appropriate if you:
- Are in the early or stable stage of Peyronie’s Disease
- Have mild to moderate curvature
- Want to avoid or delay surgery
- Have no severe penile instability
